SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The 2005 Austrian Nationality Room Scholarship was presented in memory of Dolores Stehr (see
tribute). The Austrian Ball sponsored by the Austrian American Cultural Society has been the foremost vehicle for raising funds for the beautiful baroque Austrian Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh. Since the room was completed in June of 1996, the main focus of the society has been to provide funds for the Scholarship Endowment Fund. This fund helps to defray costs for students from the university to supplement their education by spending a summer in Austria. This year, the Austrian Nationality Room committee was pleased to award the 2005 summer scholarship to
Shawn P. Kerestus
Shawn is from Barnesville, Pennsylvania and is currently enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a senior majoring in Political Science and History, plus a minor in German. A recent independent study course, taken by Shawn, focused not only on the history of Austria, but also on the modern Austrian Republic.
While visiting Salzburg on a short exchange program a few years ago, his experiences there left him with a true admiration of Austrian culture. We wish Shawn a very successful and fulfilling summer in Vienna, where he will have an opportunity to experience the life style and culture of the Austrian people.

We wish to thank the Committee for a most enjoyable and memorable evening:
Donna Hudson, Heidi Novak, Helen Semethy, Anne-Carol Tawoda, George and Elisabeth Mandl, Sister Mary Traupman, Betty McDermott, Franz Stehr, Celeste Parrendo, Howard Ziegler, Wilhelm and Jackie Dorfner.

~~~~~ Tribute ~~~~~
Dolores Stehr
July 3, 1929 - September 19, 2004
Our friend, Dolores
We were sad, but we still rejoiced with Dolores at the Blessing Service on September 21, 2004, as the Teutonia Männer und Damenchor sang a tribute and last farewell. For over 50 years she had proved her dedication to preserving and promoting German song.
As a founding member of the Austrian Society, Dolores willingly and enthusiastically served as an officer and board member, as well as on numerous committees. For more than 20 years she unselfishly gave of her talents and time for the realization of the Society's goal. Thus, it was not only for the Society, but also an especially proud day for Dolores, when on June 9, 1996 the Austrian Room in true baroque style was dedicated and given to the University of Pittsburgh.
However, after the dedication the work was not yet finished. The Society with the co-operation of many devoted members and friends started the Austrian Room Scholarship Fund. This fund helps pay student expenses for summer study in Austria. It is in memory of Dolores that this award is being given in 2005.
Dolores, we miss you, but your legacy will never be forgotten.
Your friends,
the Austrian American Cultural Society
He plans to apply the Scholarship to intensify his German skills this summer with full immersion "on location" at the Alpha Sprachinstitut in Vienna, as a prelude to a return to the University of Vienna in his senior year in order to study the contributions of Austrian philosophers in the early years of the twentieth century.
